Task migration is the process of dynamically changing whether the human or machine is responsible for task. For example, if a semi-autonomous car detects that the driver has fallen asleep at the wheel, it might take over steering the car and controlled deceleration until the driver rouses. Alternatively if the driver has given control to the car to keep in a lane on a motorway, the automation may need to pass control back to the driver if there is a complex situation arising. The handover between human and machine requires careful design, including helping the human regain situational awareness when taking over control from a machine.
